The Tropos Solution:  Tropos’ wireless broadband routers were initially designed to create a public safety communications infrastructure for use by mobile police; as such, the router hardware is highly ruggedized and weatherproof, and the overall architecture itself supports mobility that is highly resilient and secure.   As Tropos expanded into carrier markets, it added the ability to scale the network to cover very large geographic areas, multi-use capabilities, and a robust and scalable carrier-grade network management system, enabling a single infrastructure to support multiple applications.   This brief history, with much more supporting detail, is key to understanding and appreciating the value-added difference of the Tropos System Architecture solution and its role in the future of SmartGrid.

Today, Tropos solutions are used by “Smart Cities” to create metro-area wireless broadband communication networks for operating a wide range of municipal applications. In addition, Tropos is used as part of key citywide infrastructures enabling multiple applications for intelligent transportation systems and utilities, which provides centralized management, monitoring and control of various devices and systems.

Tropos provides SmartGrid customers the ability to build a wide-area aggregation network for SmartGrid communications and enables one of the key SmartGrid components, i.e., an IP broadband network that can create a reliable foundation upon which multiple demanding SmartGrid applications (i.e., distribution automation, demand response, and substation security) can be deployed. 

Tropos products, based upon the Tropos System Architecture, can easily scale from tens to hundreds and even thousands of routers participating in a single mesh network with fixed and mobile nodes.  Through its ability to coordinate routing and make airtime management decisions in realtime, Tropos solutions can automatically reroute traffic around problems, thus eliminating single points of failure and minimizing costly downtime.
