Job Description

The Communication Systems business unit is a department within the Strategic Solutions organization of the S&C Electric Company. Offices for the unit reside in both the divisional HQ in Alameda, CA and at the corporate HQ in Chicago, IL. The Communication Systems Sr. Application Engineer will report to the Communication Systems Director of Application Engineering, is to be located in Chicago, IL, and job responsibilities include:

  • Provide design and project oversight for Application Engineering projects for both international and domestic deployments.
  • Provide tracking and oversight of communication design project schedules, milestones, and deployment issues. Define and improve Communication System engineering process.
  • Provide engineering and network design support for Communication Systems proposals.
  • Perform training classes and programs for internal engineering support, field support teams as well & customers.
  • Develop and execute acceptance test plans for customer evaluations and field trials for all devices and systems sold by S&C.
  • Evaluate foreign vendor products for interoperability with S&C products and inclusion in the S&C portfolio.
  • Train AS/SST applications engineering & PSS service center and field engineering to provide customer support and serve as 2nd level support. Perform demonstrations and presentations of S&C products for customers. Perform testing of new releases of firmware and product features for release to the market.
  • Provide field support of deployed systems before, during and after system implementation.
  • Perform factory acceptance and field acceptance tests for customer sign off of deployed systems. Provide primary support of all global based communications systems business with secondary support of territories where required at direction of systems engineering manager.
  • Perform legacy network analysis and future network migration planning for utilities customers.
  • Provide peer reviews on designs from colleagues within the Communication Systems organization as well as subcontractors supporting the same.
  • Must have very strong customer facing skills and written skills in support of presentations and proposal development.

 

Job Qualifications

 

  • BS degree in Electronic Engineering
  • Demonstrated knowledge all; wireless architectures including point to point, multipoint, mesh; wireless standards including WiMax, 802.11, Zigbee, EVDO, CDMA, LTE; Network protocols including Ethernet, GigE, SONET, TDM, DNP, 61850
  • Strong technical leadership abilities with good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong understanding of network security methods and practice
  • Experience in Electric Utility Networks is highly desirable
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented
