Nominations are being accepted for the SCADA & Smart Grid Cyber Security Awards 2012 “It is important to understand that there is a lot surrounding Smart Grid + SCADA cyber security, a conference like this helps many utilities come up with concrete solutions and safeguards for the future...” (Frans Campfens – Alliander – Smart Grid ICT Consultant)
London - 10th January, 2012
On the 26th and 27th of April 2012 representatives from Europe’s leading energy and utility companies will convene in London at the SCADA & Smart Grid Cyber Security Summit 2012. This gathering of industry leaders represents the first concerted effort to address the vulnerability of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and smart grids to cyber attacks, and the implications this may have for national security.
The summit will consist of a two-day conference and exhibition and will feature 25 top-level speakers from across the industry. It will also play host to the inaugural SCADA & Smart Grid Cyber Security Awards 2012, an initiative of Oliver Kinross aimed at highlighting industry best practice and rewarding the achievements of cyber security providers in developing SCADA and Smart Grid-centric solutions.
SCADA security has been an increasingly hot topic during 2011. The recent discovery of the Duqu of advanced malware named Duqu and its predecessor STUXNET which attacked operating systems across the world, and was found to be capable to disable and compromise very specific directives within SCADA. There has also been an unprecedented number of attacks against Smart Grid operating systems. At the end of last year there was reports from the U.S. That water control systems has been attacked with worrying effect. Such security breaches highlight the vulnerability of the Smart Grid and SCADA-systems.
“We put out a lot of smart meters and it is vital that they are properly protected, meanwhile we must also be able to modify them, however in order to do this we need to be aware of the very latest changes in the threat landscapes and advice available.” (Erik Johansson – Senior Researcher - Royal Institute of Technology.)
The SCADA & Smart Grid Cyber Security Summit 2012 will assess the nature of these threats and explore the latest security solutions, safeguards, and strategies for preventing future attacks. Furthermore, it will act as a platform for the exchange of ideas and discovering cross industry synergies.
